Secret 11: Talent Is Only The Starting Point

After I’d been performing in Working Men’s Clubs for a year, I took my show to a swanky London cabaret club filled with as many bookers and reviewers as I could persuade to come along. Afterwards, the late Peter Hepple of The Stage wrote something I’ve never forgotten, “Gary Williams is a fine singer and a welcome addition to London’s cabaret scene. Now the real work begins.”

I thought I’d made it, but he knew it was just the beginning.

Ten years later I was invited back to the same room. I declined. I didn’t feel ready. All I’d learned in ten years was how little I actually knew. It took another two more years of hard work to feel I finally had a show worthy of a West End cabaret venue.

Singer Tara Khaler has some great advice for new acts, “Don’t pretend you know it all already. Expect to learn from your mistakes and be happy to make changes.”

No matter how good your act might be, there’s always more to learn.

Booking agent Gary Parkes and cruise director Keith Maynard say versatility is one of the keys to being a successful act. As Keith says, “Look at the demographic and nationalities of the audience. Be prepared to make changes to your act depending on who’s watching.”

If you are working on land you’ll also need to develop a fan base. There’s little point in having a killer show if no one ever sees it.
